Okikawa Maru in Coron

Lusong Gunboat: a wreck within arm’s reach of the surface

Lusong Gunboat is one of the most accessible wrecks in Coron Bay—so shallow that it’s visible from the surface. Resting at just 2 to 10 meters deep, this small Japanese WWII gunboat is ideal for both snorkelers and beginner divers. Despite its size, it offers a vibrant underwater experience and a glimpse into history that’s easy to reach, even without scuba gear.

Originally sunk during the same 1944 air raid that created many of Coron’s famous wrecks, the Lusong Gunboat has slowly transformed into a coral-encrusted reef teeming with marine life. Because of its calm, shallow setting, it’s also one of the most photographed wrecks in the area.

Marine life around Lusong Gunboat

Although the structure is compact, Lusong Gunboat has developed into a lively artificial reef. You’ll find schools of damselfish, wrasses, and snappers weaving through its beams, while soft corals, sponges, and feather stars cover the metal surfaces. In the crevices, macro lovers can spot nudibranchs, shrimps, and juvenile fish. The shallow depth also enhances color and visibility, making this site especially vibrant in photos.

Dive planning and safety for Kogyo Maru

Kogyo Maru is considered an advanced dive because of its depth and the potential for penetration. Nitrox is often used to extend bottom time, and proper wreck training is recommended for entering the deeper sections. Good buoyancy is essential, especially when exploring confined areas or areas with loose silt.

Why Lusong Gunboat is great for beginners

Everything about Lusong Gunboat makes it perfect for those just getting started. The wreck is small, easy to navigate, and lies in calm water with minimal current. Light floods the site from above, making it bright and colorful throughout the day. For this reason, it’s often used for check dives, snorkeling tours, or relaxed third dives after deeper sites earlier in the day.

More experienced divers also enjoy Lusong Gunboat for its photographic potential and relaxing conditions. The wreck’s angle and shallow depth make it an ideal place to practice buoyancy and composition underwater.

Planning a visit to Lusong Gunboat

Lusong Gunboat is located just a short boat ride from Coron town and is included in many combined dive or snorkeling trips. It’s also close to Lusong Coral Garden, making it easy to pair both sites in one outing. Because the wreck is so accessible, it’s suitable for all levels—even non-swimmers can enjoy the view with a mask and life vest from the surface.

Most dive shops offer this site as part of a relaxing itinerary, and it’s often a highlight for families or groups with mixed experience levels.

Lusong Gunboat is simple, scenic, and satisfying

Although it may not be the deepest or most technical dive in Coron, Lusong Gunboat offers something unique: a peaceful, colorful wreck that welcomes everyone. Whether you’re snorkeling, doing your first dive, or just floating above history, this little gunboat has a big presence.
