Kyokuzan Maru: a peaceful wreck beyond Coron
Kyokuzan Maru is one of the most accessible and well-preserved Japanese wrecks near Coron. Located off the coast of Busuanga Island, this WWII cargo ship offers divers an experience that blends calm conditions, great visibility, and rich marine life. Unlike some deeper wrecks, this site is ideal for both beginner and experienced divers.
Diving Kyokuzan Maru: easy, clear, and beautiful
The wreck rests at a depth of 20 to 40 meters and lies on its side, mostly intact. Because of its position and shallow profile, divers can easily explore both the exterior and the interior. Large cargo holds are open and spacious, with scattered remains of old vehicles and equipment. Light enters the wreck in several places, making it inviting and less intimidating for first-time wreck divers.

Marine life on Kyokuzan Maru
Kyokuzan Maru is not just a historical dive—it’s also full of life. Soft corals cover parts of the hull, while reef fish such as groupers, lionfish, and snappers move through the corridors. Macro lovers will enjoy spotting nudibranchs, shrimps, and the occasional frogfish. In addition, visibility is usually excellent here, often better than many of Coron’s inner bay wrecks.
Planning your dive to Kyokuzan Maru
Because the wreck is located farther from Coron town, reaching it usually involves a longer boat ride or even a full-day trip. However, the journey is well worth it. The site offers gentle conditions and is often less crowded than other popular wrecks. Dive shops typically visit Kyokuzan Maru as part of a special trip, so booking ahead is recommended..

Why Kyokuzan Maru should be on your list
Kyokuzan Maru offers something unique: a well-preserved wreck with an open structure, plenty of natural light, and thriving marine life. Whether you’re new to wreck diving or looking for a relaxed site to enjoy, this wreck stands out for its beauty, clarity, and calm surroundings. It’s the perfect blend of history and nature beneath the surface.
Why Kyokuzan Maru is one of Coron’s most relaxed wreck dives
Unlike the more dramatic, deeper wrecks closer to Coron town, Kyokuzan Maru offers something entirely different. This World War II cargo ship rests in the clear waters off the northeast coast of Busuanga Island. Its peaceful location, excellent visibility, and relatively shallow depth make it one of the most pleasant and accessible wreck dives in the region.
Although the boat ride to Kyokuzan Maru is a bit longer—often over an hour—it’s well worth the journey. As you approach, the water becomes noticeably clearer, and the calm conditions make everything feel slower, easier, and more enjoyable. For this reason, it’s a favorite among dive instructors and underwater photographers alike.

What makes diving Kyokuzan Maru so beginner-friendly
Kyokuzan Maru lies at a depth of around 22 to 40 meters, depending on the tide and where on the wreck you descend. Much of the ship is upright and open, with spacious holds and natural light filtering through its structure. Because of this, it feels less intimidating than other wrecks that are darker or more enclosed.
Inside the cargo areas, you can still see old equipment, including what’s believed to be trucks or machinery parts. However, the real beauty of the dive comes from how easy it is to explore without rushing. Divers can take their time along the deck, float into wide entry points, or simply enjoy the marine life that now calls this place home.
Marine life around Kyokuzan Maru: a living reef
Over the years, Kyokuzan Maru has become a thriving artificial reef. You’ll likely spot colorful reef fish, such as butterflyfish, snappers, and anthias, weaving through the wreck’s openings. In quieter corners, lionfish hover in place, while macro lovers might find nudibranchs, shrimps, or even the occasional frogfish. Soft corals have claimed parts of the deck, giving the site texture and life without overwhelming the structure.
Visibility here is often excellent—better than most wrecks inside Coron Bay—thanks to its more remote location. Because of this, it’s also a top spot for wide-angle photography, especially in the early morning when light conditions are ideal.
Planning a trip to Kyokuzan Maru
Since the wreck is located farther from the main dive hubs, trips to Kyokuzan Maru are often organized as special excursions. These may include one or two dives at the site, along with a surface interval on a nearby beach or island. It’s best to book ahead, especially during the high season, to make sure your dive shop has availability for the trip.
Although the wreck is beginner-friendly, it still goes deep enough that nitrox is recommended if available. Divers who want to go inside should have proper training, but even staying on the outside offers more than enough to enjoy.
Final thoughts on Kyokuzan Maru
If you’re looking for a calm, clear, and visually rich wreck dive, Kyokuzan Maru should be on your list. It’s a perfect balance between historical intrigue and relaxed exploration. Whether it’s your first wreck or your fiftieth, this peaceful dive site leaves a lasting impression—not through drama, but through elegance, light, and the slow beauty of underwater discovery.
